Alstom is a global leader in the world of power generation, power transmission and rail infrastructure and sets the benchmark for innovative and environmentally friendly technologies. Alstom builds the fastest train and the highest capacity automated metro in the world, provides turnkey integrated power plant solutions and associated services for a wide variety of energy sources, including hydro, nuclear, gas, coal and wind, and it offers a wide range of solutions for power transmission, with a focus on smart grids. The Group employs 93,000 people in around 100 countries. It had sales of over €20.3 billion and booked close to €21.5 billion in orders in 2013/14.
At Alstom, innovation is a driver for strategic growth. The R&D expenses of Alstom reached €733 million in fiscal year 2013/14. The Group will sustain its capital expenditures to further strengthen Alstom’s presence in emerging countries and by higher research and development expenses to keep its technological edge. Among a number of substantial developments, we continued our focus on offering higher output, better efficiency and increased flexibility.
Alstom Group was among the companies ranked highest by the European Patent Office for patent application filings in Europe. By far, Alstom was granted 1334 patents in Europe, and 458 patents in China. Alstom’s recent patents number (Less than 8 years) accounts for 52% among European companies.
To implement its open innovation policy, Alstom is developing partnership with top universities and research organization but also Alstom is supporting innovation in SMEs and start-ups. Today Alstom has 180 University partnership in 20 countries and its presence in Asia and more precisely in China is expanding.
For example, Alstom has established solid partnership with China’s leading universities. We have signed partnership agreements with Huazhong University of Science & Technology (HUST) and “Ecole Centrale De Pekin”. The Wuhan Boiler Company Ltd (WBC) and HUST are one of first national experimental engineering education centers approved by the China Secondary Education Bureau. The experiment program offers student both undergraduate and graduate courses which is led by engineering experts from both WBC and the institution. A number of joint R&D projects are under development between Alstom and top universities. Alstom is partnering with Tsinghua University on hydro-related research projects, the first of which is related to pumped storage power. Alstom has also established partnerships with Chinese universities like Jiaotong or UTSEUS (University of technology Sino-European) in Shanghai, Zhejiang or the City University in Hong Kong where a joint lab has been signed recently to develop the future software platform for Energy Management in a context of smart city.
Alstom China offers comprehensive solutions for rail transport, power generation and transmission. In the past 56 years, Alstom China has been a long-term dedicated partner for the development of China’s rail transport, power and transmission infrastructure industry. By joining hands with Chinese partners, Alstom enables customers to be more competitive, efficient and environmentally friendly. Currently, Alstom presents in China through more than 20 entities with around 9,000 employees, and our investment continues.
With its two Energy sectors – Thermal Power and Renewable Power operating in China, Alstom provides an extensive range of power solutions for a wide variety of energy sources including hydro, nuclear, coal, gas, biomass, solar and wind to the China market. As a global leader in air quality control system in terms of reduction of CO2 and nitrogen oxide emissions, Alstom invests strongly in the research and development of environmental friendly, clean power solutions in China, with a carbon capture and storage (CCS) demonstration projects in China with China Datang Corporation. Alstom’s advanced and reliable technological expertise has equipped many prestigious power projects, including the Three Gorges Project, Xiangjiaba hydro power plant, Daya Bay and Ling Ao nuclear projects.
As a witness of the rapid development of China’s rail transport, Alstom has started technology ex change and friendly cooperation with the Chinese railway industry since the 1950s. As a key player in the rapid development of the Chinese railway system, Alstom has won a number of key contracts together with local partners including the manufacturing of high-speed Electrical Multiple Units (EMUs) and electrification of the Shi-Tai high-speed line from MoR. In Chinese mainland, Alstom has provided traction systems to 11 metro lines including Beijing Metro Line 6 and Line 15 and provided signaling systems to 27 metro projects.
With a presence of more than 50 years in China, Alstom has participated many important the Three Gorges HVDC project from Gezhou Dam to Shanghai and SGCC’s 1st 1100 kV transmission line, and delivered the ±600kV DC converter transformers to Brazilian Rio Madeira project, which is world’s longest power transmission line. In March 2011, Alstom Grid opened China Technology Center in Shanghai as an advanced centre for research, development and testing of UHVAC and UHVDC transmission equipment and energy management solutions.
Xiangjiaba hydro power plant: Alstom designed and manufactured four hydroelectric generating units for the Xiangjiaba underground hydro power plant, which were delivered in a record time for such large machines – at an a verage of one unit every four months. These four units successfully entered commercial operation between November 2012 and June 2013. The units all passed reliability tests in the first phase. The turbines and generators were manufactured at Alstom’s hydropower industrial facility in Tianjin (China). The facility is Alstom’s largest hydropower manufacturing base and a leading supplier of equipment in China and across Asia.
These 800 MW class units coupled with an 889 MVA generator are the most powerful hydroelectric generating units in the world. Each unit is able to supply the yearly electricity consumption of approximately 5 million inhabitants during a year. Once all eight of the 800 MW/889 MVA units come on line, Xiangjiaba will be China’s third highest capacity hydroelectric plant and the world’s seventh highest capacity hydropower plant.
